| Next to heating and cooling
systems, your water heater is among the largest energy users in your home. Precisely because
it works 'round the clock all year long, your water heater is an excellent source of savings.
- Wrap your water heater in an insulating jacket. (Check
your owner's manual and make sure your appliance isn't already insulated or that using
an insulating jacket won't void your warranty).
- Unless you have a dishwasher that requires water at 140 degrees, lower the setting
on your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees. If your dial reads "Warm —
Normal — Hot" or "Low — Medium — High," set the thermostat
midway between "Warm — Normal" or "Low — Medium."
- Install hot water pipe insulation.
- Install faucet aerators and low flow showerheads with control levers or shut off switches.
- Tighten faucets and plug leaky joints in your hot water pipes.
- Take quick showers instead of long baths.
- Use cold water whenever you can.
