The Low Income Home Energy
Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program, jointly administered by the
New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Family Development, and the Department
of Community Affairs.
LIHEAP provides subsidies to help low-income families and individuals pay for their heating
costs or heating bills associated with rent.
In addition to the heating assistance benefit, households may also be eligible for emergency
energy assistance and medically necessary cooling assistance.
To be eligible for LIHEAP benefits, the applicant must be responsible for home heating
costs, either directly or included in the rent, and must meet income eligibility requirements.
